The addition of a third Holopuni canoe this year gave us the opportunity to the break in new sailing crewmembers from Tahiti. To accomplish this Team Holopuni Hawaii split up their crew with Nick Beck and Steve Baker each steering a canoe. This gave us the opportunity to introduce some of the up coming Tahitian paddlers in the finer point of sailing canoe steering and sail handling. It was especially rewarding since the three new Tahitian crewmembers represented the islands of Moorea, Huahine and Bora Bora. By the end of our voyage they had all spent time steering, handling the sheet and trimming the balance of the amas. They are natural watermen and picked up canoe sailing fast.
